Cleaning
Often the most basic, but at the same time most important, a procedure that a dental office performs is the cleaning at a patient's regular check-up appointment. The cleaning removes plaque and tartar from teeth which regular brushing and flossing have not been able to. This procedure also involves a thorough inspection of your mouth in order to prevent, catch, or diagnose anything that could be going wrong.

Dental X-rays
Dental x-rays are often the only way we can inside your teeth and catch any problems before they manifest themselves outwardly. X-rays are crucial to performing a complete dental examination. Often, we are able to see signs of decay, impacted teeth, abscesses, and a variety of other conditions that could become problematic and painful if not detected and treated early. Dental x-rays are completely safe and necessary; how often we recommend them depends on age and current dental health.

Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is a process using mild bleach to remove stains or discolorations from teeth in order to restore them to natural, healthy color. While over-the-counter products may be tempting, don't be fooled by their clever advertising and unproven claims. Our procedure is extremely effective and safe. Teeth become discolored for a variety of reasons. Most often, it's a product of frequently drinking dark beverages such as coffee, tea, or Coca-Cola-type products. The use of tobacco products is also a common cause of stained or discolored teeth. In some cases, some antibiotics have been known to darken children's developing teeth. The natural aging process is also a culprit when it comes to teeth losing their natural beauty as the dentin underneath the tooth enamel darkens over time. Finally, things like accidents that affect the nerve or root canal therapy can cause a discoloration of the tooth. Our whitening procedure is extremely safe and proven effective when used correctly by a certified dentist. Depending on your staining and desires, we might choose either a light-activated whitening for immediate results, or we might send you home with an at-home whitening kit. We may also determine that a completely different procedure might be more appropriate for achieving your desired results.

Invisalign
Braces are a device used to straighten teeth and realign them with respect to a person's bite with a focus on improving their dental health. Usually, braces are used to correct such problems as overbites, underbites, cross bites, crooked teeth, and various other teeth or jaw problems. Braces can be cosmetic, fixing a problem that's simply a matter of aesthetics and patient choice, or structural, fixing a problem that is extremely important for the bite of the patient and thus their long-term dental health. At Miswak Dentistry, you will always receive a comprehensive exam and before any recommendations are made. Also, it's never too late to get braces; more and more adults are using this treatment to correct problems that were not corrected in childhood, so don't hesitate to ask us about whether braces are right for you.

Veneers
Installing veneers is part of a cosmetic procedure using porcelain or composite facings custom-made for each patient that is then bonded to the visible surfaces of teeth. The facings can be used to correct a variety of problems like straightening teeth, whitening, closing spaces, or repairing chipped teeth. While the facings are extremely thin, the procedure still involves shaving an equal amount off of the damaged tooth before bonding the veneer in order to retain the natural look and feel of the tooth.

Enamel Shaping
Enamel shaping is exactly what it sounds like. It is the shaping and contouring of natural tooth enamel in order to improve the overall appearance. This can be used to smooth ridges, correct some minor cases of crowded or overlapping teeth, and make other small adjustments.

Bonding
Bonding is a simple yet effective procedure. The procedure uses a resin material applied to the tooth and then hardened. We most often use this procedure in order to fill in gaps between teeth or sometimes to lengthen them.

Inlays and Onlays
These are lab-fabricated materials that are used when a cavity is too big for a simple filling, but it is not so dire that an entire crown is required. An inlay fills within the cusp tips of the tooth, while onlays stretch over one or more cusps in order to strengthen.

Bridges
A bridge is used to replace on or more missing teeth. By using a bridge, we are able to keep the teeth from drifting into the open space created by a tooth missing for whatever reason, as well as preserve the natural bite thus not putting any added pressure on the jaw joint. Bridges are anchored in the gum on either side with implants that penetrate into the surface. In this way, a bridge is extremely secure and is also permanently in place. Caring for a bridge can sometimes require special instructions when it comes to flossing and rinsing the area around the bridge in order to keep the tissue healthy, but brushing can proceed as normal.

Dental Implants
Dental implants are posts that are placed surgically in the jaw after which an artificial tooth is attached to the implanted post. These can often require a specialist, as they are invasive surgical procedures. Implants can be used as an artificial root for placing a single tooth or as anchors for a bridge that can replace multiple teeth. By far, dental implants are the most natural-looking solution for tooth replacement. They are extremely long-lasting (over 90% last longer than 15 years) and will never develop decay or require other care.

White Fillings
Silver fillings are almost entirely a thing of the past. While there are very certain cases that could require them, for the most part, we use fillings made of a strong resin that we then match in color to the surfaces around it. White fillings are durable and vastly more aesthetically attractive than past alternatives. Fillings are the most common restorative dental procedure and involve the removal of decay from a tooth followed by the insertion of a filling in order to take up the decayed space and restore strength to the tooth.

Crowns
A crown is a piece of material, usually gold, white porcelain, or a combination, which fits over the entirety of a tooth to cover, strengthen, and seal a damaged tooth. Crowns are often used when a filling is not feasible and the problem calls for a different solution. A crown can be used in the following instances: a largely decayed tooth that is so damaged that filling will not be held; in the event that old breaks down or the tooth around it decays; a cracked tooth that cannot be sealed by a filling must be crowned in order to hold together; a broken tooth is much too weak to hold a filling and thus must be crowned in order to prevent further breakage, though in some cases it is impossible to save a fractured tooth.

Dentures
Dentures are a common procedure provided to those who have lost most or all of their natural teeth due to aging, disease, or accident. While a mouth full of healthy teeth is aesthetically pleasing, it is also extremely important in normal day-to-day functioning. Dentures help patients regain their ability to eat, speak clearly, and give support to the lips and cheeks.

A complete denture is used after all teeth have been removed from a patient's mouth.

An overdenture requires that at least 2 roots be kept in place. These roots are then used to hold the denture in place by using inserts that attach to the denture.

An immediate denture is placed in the mouth on the same day that the teeth are extracted, thereby not giving the gums time to heal first. This is preferred by some patients because it means that they do not have to be without teeth during the period in which their gums heal from the extractions.

A partial denture is sometimes called a removable bridge and is used to replace multiple teeth. However, there must be teeth left in order for the part to have something to attach to. This denture is removable and will help prevent tooth shifting while also preserving your remaining teeth.

Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy usually entails one to three visits. During the first visit, a small hole is drilled through the top of the tooth and into the inner chamber. Diseased tissue is removed, the inner chamber cleansed and disinfected, and the tiny canals reshaped. The cleansed chamber and canals are filled with an elastic material and medication designed to prevent infection. If necessary, the drilled hole is temporarily filled until a permanent seal is made with a crown. Most patients who have root canal experience little or no discomfort or pain, and enjoy a restored tooth that can last almost as long as its healthy original.
